While the end of the year is fast approaching, it’s not too late to satisfy one of those resolutions you made back in January.
People often make New Year’s resolutions. Maybe they resolve to eat healthier, spend their money more wisely, exercise regularly, or read more books. Often these resolutions fall by the wayside by February or March, not to be considered again until the following January rolls around.
Another resolution people make is to get their Will done or updated. Unlike eating healthier or exercising regularly, putting together your estate plan is something that can still happen before the end of this year. It is a resolution from nearly twelve months ago that can still be kept, a box that can still be checked off your to-do list.
There are other reasons to put together your estate plan at the end of the year. One is that this time of year reminds us of the many blessings in our lives. By spending time with the people we love during the holiday season, we are reminded why we care about them so much. The season reminds us of our desire to provide for them, both during our lives and after we have passed away.
A second reason is that, for many people, the end of the year provides time off of work or school and schedules that are more flexible than they may be otherwise. Finding time for a meeting with an estate planner during the last quarter of the year can be easier.
One other reason is that many people travel for the holidays. They spend time in planes and cars, covering great distances. It is wise to have your Will, Powers of Attorney, and other necessary documents in place before embarking on a trip.
Contacting an experienced estate planning attorney yet this year to craft an estate plan for you and your family will allow you to complete one of your resolutions from last January, provide for the people you love in the event of your death, utilize some of that time off of work or school in a productive way, and have one less thing to worry about before you go on that holiday trip.
